Commissioners authorize multiple grant applications to fund investigations, internships, scrap-tire cleanup and infrastructure

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners voted on Sept. 8 to pursue and accept several grants intended to support public safety, workforce development, litter cleanup, landfill diversion and infrastructure repair.
Commissioners approved an application to the Judicial Council of Georgia to fund an additional investigator to assist clearing cases for the district attorney. The board also approved applying for an Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) internship program, which would provide one or two semester-long interns to county departments at no direct salary cost to the county.
The board approved pursuing a scrap-tire disposal grant to host a central drop-off where residents can bring tires for free; county staff and commissioners noted the prior successful event and estimated prior collections at roughly 2,400 tires. The board also approved applying for a grant to purchase a wood chipping/grinding unit to turn trees and stumps into mulch for schools, county landscaping and landfill diversion.
Separately, the board accepted a $300,000 grant to replace a culvert and improve a road; commissioners noted SPLOST funds are available to provide the county’s match and that the project will provide both roadway repair and wildlife/fish benefits.
Commissioners framed grant-seeking as a way of using outside funding to provide county services without drawing on property tax revenue. All grant-related motions passed on recorded 3-0 votes.
Ending: Departments receiving awards or moving forward with applications will complete standard grant administration and reporting procedures; project-specific implementation details and timelines will be set by the administering departments.
