Whitfield County commissioners approved a series of routine and substantive items at their Sept. 8, 2025 meeting, including multiple grant applications and acceptances, vehicle purchases and surplus declarations, several rezoning requests, and an updated memorandum of understanding for school resource officers.
The board voted unanimously (3-0) to approve: application and acceptance of grants related to investigation support for the district attorney (Judicial Council of Georgia); an internship program through the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG); a scrap-tire disposal program; an equipment grant to fund a wood-chipping/grinding unit for mulch and landfill diversion; and acceptance of a $300,000 grant to help replace a culvert and make related road and wildlife/fish improvements. The board also approved the county’s July financials and accepted the Hopewell Manor subdivision road into the county road system after inspection.
Other approved items included a 2025 Ford Ranger purchase for county use, declaration of multiple county vehicles as surplus with one donated to Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) for training and the rest to be sold on GovDeals, and the clearance and sale of old laptop units from sheriff’s vehicles. The board also approved an updated school resource officer (SRO) memorandum of understanding to add language required by recent state legislation regarding student privacy.
On zoning, the board approved two rezoning requests recommended by the planning commission (items a and b); approved a third rezone (item c) where staff had recommended approval but the planning commission had voted to deny; and denied rezoning item d. A delayed rezone that had been postponed pending a traffic study was approved with conditions drawn from that study and Georgia DOT recommendations.
Motions to approve routine items such as the agenda, consent agenda, minutes and the finance report also passed on recorded 3-0 votes. The board recessed into executive session at the end of the public meeting for personnel and real-estate matters; the public meeting record notes no further public votes after recess.
