The Jones County Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 20 recommended approval of several conditional uses — including an auto repair service and multiple single‑wide dwelling requests — and tabled one rezoning application after the applicant did not appear. The commission’s recommendations are advisory; the Board of Commissioners will consider final action at its Nov. 4 meeting.
The commission voted to recommend a conditional use for an automotive repair business at 109 Bowen Hill Road submitted by Austin Meeks. Meeks told the commission he would operate from a single bay on the property and use part of the rear lot; no members of the public spoke for or against the request. The commission moved and seconded approval and recorded a recommendation to forward the request to the county commissioners.
The commission recommended approval of a barndominium-style dwelling with metal siding proposed by Nathan Creamer and Madeline Ward on a 5.74‑acre parcel next to 436 Stagecoach Road (zone R‑1). Creamer said the house would include a concrete slab and a wrap‑around porch and that landscaping and existing woods would limit visibility from the road. The record shows the vote produced three votes in favor and one recusal; the item will be forwarded to the Board of Commissioners with that recommendation.
A conditional use requested to allow a single‑wide dwelling at 292 Paris Morton Road (two acres, Ag‑1) was recommended to proceed; a family member spoke on behalf of the applicant and no public opposition was recorded.
The commission considered a rezoning and conditional use request from Sherry Daniel to permit a single‑wide residence at 186 Woodward Drive. Commissioners modified the request to designate a maximum of a 2‑acre rezoned parcel centered on the house site; the commission recommended the 2‑acre rezoning and will forward that recommendation to the Board of Commissioners.
A separate rezoning request from Derek Davis to change a 1.34‑acre parcel at the corner of Shady Road Plaza and Joycliffe Road from R‑1 to C‑2 to allow a full‑service automotive repair and maintenance facility was again not represented at the table. Commissioners discussed options including denial or tabling; the commission voted to table the application one more time to allow the applicant to appear.
All items recorded at this meeting are recommendations only; final decisions will be made by the Jones County Board of Commissioners at its next scheduled meeting.
