The Fort Myers City Council on Oct. 20 voted against authorizing a letter of intent to lease the city-owned Hall of 50 States building at 2254 Edwards Drive, stopping the city manager from moving ahead with negotiations with a prospective lessee.
Supporters of other proposals, including longtime applicant Jim Becker, had urged the council to allow wider participation in the process. Jim Becker, who said he has sought the site for years, warned the council that he had continued interest and experience operating cultural and recording venues downtown. "I've been doing this for 48 years ... the Hall 50 States, I'm gonna make it what originally was, a venue for concerts and then also recording," Becker said during public comment.
