Councilor announces Nov. 1 expungement expo, commissioners praise program and volunteers

City Councilor Vanessa Hall Harper told the commission that an Expungement Expo will be held Nov. 1 at the 306 Sixth Street North Event Center. The event will provide volunteer attorneys to review records, municipal and county clerks on site, and partner organizations that help attendees access employment, housing and other supports after records are cleared.
"This will be held on November 1... at the 306 Sixth Street North Event Center, where we have attorneys who volunteer to work," Councilor Hall Harper said at the meeting, asking commissioners to share the event information widely and to encourage pre-registration. She emphasized that the county where the offense occurred must be the jurisdiction for any expungement and that municipal-clerk staff and a judge have created accommodations to clear municipal warrants tied to attendees.
Commissioners praised Hall Harper’s work in organizing the program and said the initiative has produced substantial results. The meeting record noted that since the first expungement expo several years ago, organizers estimate the program has helped more than 500 people have records expunged. Commissioners encouraged volunteers and community organizations to support the Nov. 1 event.
Commissioners also said the expo is a point of civic re-entry: staff at the event assist with voter-registration questions and link attendees to resources for employment and housing.
