The Birmingham City Council and visiting state lawmakers honored Councilor Valerie Abbott on Oct. 21 with multiple proclamations and resolutions recognizing her 24 years of service representing District 3.
Mayor Randall L. Woodfin read a proclamation and several local and state officials — including Senator Rodger Smitherman, Representative Kelvin Datcher and other members of the state delegation — presented resolutions commending Abbott’s tenure, which the meeting record said is the longest contiguous service of any councilor in Birmingham history.
Speakers highlighted Abbott’s neighborhood advocacy, leadership on planning and environmental issues, and work with city boards including the Planning Commission, Tree Commission and Metropolitan Planning Organization. The mayor cited neighborhood projects, community gardens and recycling improvements as examples of Abbott’s influence.
Abbott was presented with a city resolution, a state senate resolution, a state flag from the Alabama Senate, and a commemorative jersey marking 24 years of service. Colleagues from city government and civic organizations offered remarks and a short video tribute.
In remarks to the council, Abbott said she will continue to follow city projects and remains engaged in community work; she was sworn in to the council during the ceremony for the formal resolution record.
The council adopted its congratulatory resolution by unanimous consent and passed the state and local recognitions during the Oct. 21 meeting.
