Lake Havasu police remind drivers to stop for school buses when red lights flash

"Once the red lights start flashing and the stop sign comes out, you must stop on both sides of the roadway, either direction," Burns said, adding that drivers should remain stopped until the red lights stop and the stop arm is retracted.
Burns said drivers should treat a bus's amber flashing lights like a yellow traffic signal and "anticipat[e] that they're gonna be stopping soon and putting out the red stop sign," advising motorists to slow down or prepare to stop when they see amber lights. He emphasized that children may be crossing the street or getting on or off a bus at a nearby driveway.
"Stay stopped until the red lights stop and the bus stop sign goes in, and then the bus takes off, then you can proceed safely," Burns said.
Burns concluded the message by urging motorists to watch for children during the school year.
The recording was presented as a routine safety tip; no legislative or enforcement action was announced during the message.
