Highway commissioner reports paving, culvert work and partnership bid with LCO for County Road K

The Sawyer County Highway Department reported progress on multiple road projects, staffing changes and a potential partnership with Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) on a design grant for a roundabout on County Road K.
Highway Commissioner (name not specified at the meeting) told the Public Works Committee the department completed mowing, crack sealing and mastic work in several towns, replaced culverts north of the landing on County CC ahead of a pavement project, and paved a short section of County B after a single-night closure. The commissioner said bridge approach work and paving were completed on State Highway 40 near Bruce and that the county provided a paver and crew to a neighboring county after that countys paver had an incident.
The commissioner said a partnership opportunity with LCO could fund 100% of the design for County Road K and a roundabout; he reported LCO passed a resolution last week to partner with Sawyer County. The highway commissioner said he would still apply for the design and construction grant; if LCO secures 100% design funding, Sawyer County would drop its separate design application and pursue construction funding.
Staffing and operations: the department hired a new patrol supervisor, Jason Prince, who started Monday, and the department said a previously open employee position in Hayward was filled. The department created a weekly on-call phone rotation for after-hours calls; the employee who carries the on-call phone for the seven-day period will receive additional pay for that week, and overtime rules apply when employees respond outside normal hours.
Other items noted: the county completed work at the Nelson Lake boat landing approved previously by Public Works and County Board; the county received approval to replace five culverts for the Flamos Forest project; the county is awaiting payment for a right-of-way purchase for the County D project; and the state will pay for a garage door opener for a salt dome to reduce manual opening time.
No formal vote was taken on these reports. Committee members asked questions about regular attendance by the new maintenance director (not present), and the commissioner said he expects to have the new maintenance director attend future meetings.
