During the public-participation portion of the meeting, Port Orange resident Patricia Miles urged the council to consider supporting repeal of Senate Bill 180 and to work with constituents and legislators to protect local home-rule authority.
Miles said the measure, as she understands it, "attacks our home rule" and leaves communities exposed to special-interest developer influences. "We deserve respect for local control and a way to protect our pristine bridle and environmentally sensitive land and our natural resources," she told the council, and she cited flooding in her Royal Palm Village neighborhood as a reason for local oversight of development decisions.
Miles said she speaks with legislators in Tallahassee and urged council members to communicate concerns to state representatives and to "work to fix the problems associated with Senate Bill 180." She identified herself as a Port Orange resident and a retired art teacher with decades of local civic involvement.
