Department of Corrections reports rising average daily population and accreditation success

The Department of Corrections presented its fourth-quarter report to the Public Safety and Legal Administration Committee on Oct. 13, reporting a rising average daily population, expanded service partnerships and successful external accreditation scores.

Chief Elder Dancy said the department’s average daily population increased to about 113 and that booking numbers were 394 during the quarter. She described partnerships with health providers including Grady Hospital psychiatry and Emory forensic psychiatry fellows, and with the nonprofit Someone Cares to provide services for detainees. The department also highlighted reentry coordination with the Georgia Department of Corrections and transportation outcomes.

Dancy told the committee the department’s accreditation review returned unusually high scores: a 100 for mandatory standards and a 100 for non-mandatory standards, after an external panel reviewed the facility in Denver. The department credited staff and a dedicated accreditation team for the result.

The department also noted staffing stability with a reduction in the vacancy gap during the quarter, continued virtual-court operations and growth in the e-bond platform (1,237 bonds processed in the quarter). Chief Dancy highlighted corrections week, staff recognition, and intern programs that supported outreach and administrative tasks.

Dancy said Fulton County was housing detainees under the intergovernmental arrangement and reported 452 detainees housed as of Oct. 2 (302 females, 150 males); the number fluctuated and was 464 at a later check. She thanked the committee and departments that supported corrections-week events and the food-service team for operations beyond the facility.
