The Miami Beach Planning Board on Oct. 7 transmitted a favorable recommendation to the City Commission for a code change that would add a definition for "bicycle rideshare station" and expand the city’s alternate parking incentives to allow private-property micromobility stations to reduce vehicular parking requirements for new developments.
Under the proposed amendment, a bicycle rideshare station is a designated location of docks, racks or devices where bicycles are secured when not in use and which is part of a network that allows users to pick up and return bikes at different stations. The amendment would permit property owners to partner with a network operator (for example the city vendor or a private provider) and, if the station meets program requirements, claim an alternate-parking incentive to reduce required vehicular spaces on-site. Staff said the purpose is to increase micromobility availability, reduce curb congestion and support modal shifts for short trips.
The board voted to transmit the amendment with a favorable recommendation. Staff noted that private sites using a different vendor would need operational coordination with any citywide network if the developer expects cross‑station returns.
