The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 22 appointed three regular members and four alternates to the county Board of Adjustment following interviews conducted earlier in the day.
Commissioners selected Gregory (Greg) Phillips, Gabriel (Gabe) Quisenberry and Mark Diaz for the three regular seats. After multiple rounds of tallies and discussion about majority thresholds, commissioners agreed to appoint Tom (William) Belt, David Barley, Wesley Green and Carol McCrory as the four alternates. The panel noted the Board of Adjustment requires a full set of alternates to ensure it can hold hearings when regular members are unavailable.
Commissioners discussed procedure for filling alternates when some commissioners ranked fewer than four candidates and clarified that selecting the top vote-getters would allow the board to achieve a full slate. Commissioner Horton moved to approve the slate of regular members and alternates; Commissioner Wells seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote.
Commissioners thanked all applicants and noted the responsibilities and time commitment required to serve on the quasi‑judicial board.
