SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield City Council on Monday appointed Andrew Buck as interim city councilor for Ward 5 to fill a vacancy through Dec. 31, 2026.
Buck was the lone candidate interviewed during a 15‑minute work session. The council moved the appointment in regular session and the motion passed on a roll call vote with all five voting councilors present voting yes: Councilors Weber, Moe, Bradley, Blackwell and Stout.
During his interview, Buck described his view of Springfield’s prospects: “I think the thing I like best about Springfield is over the last 20 years, there's a lot to be proud of. ... I think there's a lot of potential, and really, there's just an upward trajectory.” He answered the council’s questions on collaboration, problem solving and how elected officials should work with the city manager and staff. Buck said listening and asking questions are the first steps to resolving complex problems.
City staff said the appointment is expected to be formalized with an oath of office scheduled for the following Monday, subject to the appointee’s availability. The interview format and process were conducted under the city’s vacancy procedures: each councilor asked a preassigned question at the dais and deliberation would occur in regular session if needed.
No amendments or conditions were attached to the appointment motion. The council recorded the vote as 5 yes, 0 no. Buck is tentatively scheduled to be sworn in at the next council meeting.
