The Alabama State Board of Education on a November day in 2020 approved a series of routine motions, adopted resolutions to appoint committees and to authorize program reviews at two universities, and presented an employee recognition resolution, with all recorded roll-call votes unanimous.
The actions took place after the board established a quorum and temporarily suspended portions of the Alabama Administrative Code related to hand-raising votes and physical-presence quorum requirements so the board could proceed under the temporary voting procedure. "Unanimous vote, governor," the roll caller announced after the suspension motion passed.
Board members then approved the meeting agenda and minutes from the Oct. 8, 2020, meeting; adopted a resolution commending Glendora Christian as the Barbara Fannin Memorial Employee of the Quarter for 2020; appointed a career and technical education state course of study committee and a social studies committee; and authorized reviews of educator preparation programs at Jacksonville State University and the University of Alabama.
State Superintendent Dr. Mackey reported to the board, highlighting Jacksonville State University's proposed programs. "This will be the first true computer science degree program under the new rules that you adopted last year," he said, referring to the class B computer science (grades 6–12) program the board authorized staff to review. He also described a proposed class A mathematics specialist (K–5) program that Jacksonville State would develop. Mackey read the list of National Blue Ribbon Schools the department had announced earlier in the month and said the board would schedule formal recognition at a later meeting.
