Commission signals intent to explore moving county insurance back to commercial market
Summary
County staff presented a comparison showing potential savings if Saline County moves from KCAMP to commercial insurers (Travelers/Chubb). Commissioners asked staff to prepare a consent‑agenda item to notify KCAMP by Nov. 1 so the county can pursue commercial coverage that may lower projected costs.

Deputy County Administrator Hannah Bet and insurance broker Mark Skidmore briefed the Saline County commission on insurance proposals for 2026 and the near‑term deadline to notify KCAMP (Kansas County Association Multiline Pool) if the county chooses to pursue commercial coverage instead.
Bet said KCAMP signaled a likely 15% increase for the county’s 2026 contribution — a rise that could increase the county’s contribution from the budgeted $669,000 to roughly $746,415 and create a shortfall. Iron Insurance presented comparative proposals that combine Travelers and Chubb coverages with lower projected premium costs; the commercial proposal cited in the briefing totaled $586,723. Bet said the difference is not “free money” because commercial policies typically carry higher deductibles, and the county should retain savings in the insurance budget line to cover larger out‑of‑pocket deductibles if a claim occurs.
Commissioners voiced support for returning to the commercial market and asked staff to prepare the required KCAMP notice by Nov. 1 and to return a formal consent‑calendar item so the board can act next week. Mark Skidmore and county staff said additional documentation from the insurers will be required and that staff would bring a formal recommendation and policy documents once available.
No final binding contract change was made on Oct. 21; the commission directed staff to proceed with next steps toward notifying KCAMP and obtaining commercial quotes for formal approval.
