Commission authorizes AT&T petition to install new fiber through Geary County

The Geary County Commission voted to authorize a petition from AT&T to install a new buried fiber line that will link Topeka with Wichita and run through parts of Geary County.
Public Works Administrator Jeremy Myers reviewed the proposed route, which traverses McDowell, Tollie Hill, Asher, Clark Street, Junction Road and State Highway 57 right-of-way areas. He told commissioners the installation is a new fiber line (not a replacement) and that the contractor may need county inspections in rocky patches to confirm trenching depths and restoration. He said any bores under streams are allowed as long as the work does not hold up bridge decks.
Myers told the commission the same company completed an O-40 project earlier in the year and generally complied with right-of-way restoration and with requirements that nothing be placed in the bottom of ditches or create mowing hazards.
A commissioner moved to approve the petition; another commissioner seconded and the motion passed by voice vote. Myers estimated the work would take roughly three months once started.
