Commission approves Safe Streets for All contract; county to pay up front and seek federal reimbursement

The Geary County Commission voted to approve a contract with Kimley Horn and Associates Inc. to expand the county’s Local Road Safety Plan to meet federal SS4A (Safe Streets and Roads for All) guidelines.
Public Works Administrator Jeremy Myers told commissioners that three proposals were received and a committee of county staff (Betsy, Myers, Caitlin and Tammy) recommended Kimley Horn. The firm will carry out stakeholder engagement, community outreach and mapping; Jeremy said the public will be able to drop pins on an online map to flag local safety concerns.
Commissioners approved a motion authorizing the public works administrator to sign the contract. Jeremy said the grant is a reimbursement grant: Geary County will pay Kimley Horn up front from fund 0807 (the county’s federal fund exchange) and request federal reimbursement. He said the grant requires a $10,000 local match and that a CIP request for that match will appear in the fourth quarter.
Jeremy noted the city of Junction City has a separate SS4A grant and that county and city efforts must remain administratively separate for grant compliance. He also said GIS staff will be heavily involved in the mapping work once the project is under way.
The commission approved the selection and authorized signature by voice vote.
