The Perryton ISD Board of Trustees approved a set of routine personnel, policy and compliance items at its meeting, including a one-year teaching contract, a budget amendment to hire a licensed vocational nurse, an adjunct faculty agreement with Perryton ISD, and district- and campus-level improvement plans. All motions passed unanimously, 7-0.
The board reviewed and approved the district's posted school book list required by recent state law. Board members spent the most time on the book list item, discussing how the district posts titles online and provides a 30-day public viewing period. The board heard that the list had been posted for the required 30 days and that a link for public comments produced no responses. One board member called the list “a long, long list” and advised members to use available tools to review the materials. Another board member raised concerns about a specific title and recommended parental guidance; the board confirmed that Malcolm X photography is on the junior high list and that the controversial 1619 Project did not appear in the posted list after searching the online file.
Mr. Brown, staff member, recommended hiring Eden Rivera to fill a high school Spanish-teacher vacancy. "Eden Rivera is the one I'm recommending. She was working for us as a para... her Spanish is excellent," Mr. Brown said. The board voted to hire Rivera on a one-year, noncertified teacher contract; the motion carried, 7-0.
The board approved a district budget amendment to hire an LVN (licensed vocational nurse) for the elementary school, described in the meeting as the position indicated by the district staffing study. The motion to amend the budget passed, 7-0.
Trustees also approved an adjunct faculty agreement with Perryton ISD for Marcus Pruninger (listed in the motion as Marcus Pruninger, name pronunciation confirmed during the meeting). The agreement, used routinely to permit counting attendance while students are away for FFA/4-H stock shows and similar activities, was approved as amended to remove Scott Strong's name from a second-paragraph reference; the motion carried, 7-0.
The board added one name to the district's list of certified T-test appraisers after staff reported the person had since passed the state certification exam; that motion also passed, 7-0.
On attendance procedures, staff explained that the state now requires more frequent reporting and that the district now submits attendance data daily (rather than every four or six weeks under prior practice). Kelly, staff member, said the state "reporting every day" creates additional workload and that the system allows some later corrections but not as easily as under the old schedule. The board adopted the 2025–26 attendance procedures manual, 7-0.
The board approved the 2025–26 district improvement plan and the individual campus improvement plans, documents the board said are required for federal funding compliance and describe goals and strategies used districtwide and at each campus. Tyree, staff member, described a comprehensive needs assessment and committee review process used to develop the plan. The motions to approve both the district plan and the campus plans carried, 7-0.
The board set the next regular meeting for Nov. 17 and adjourned.
