The Bannock County Board of Commissioners approved four applications for indigent cremation assistance on Oct. 21, authorizing payments of $1,500 for each case.
Indigent services staff told the board the deceased in each case met the county’s eligibility criteria under Idaho law and that no responsible parties were available to repay the expense. “For cremation expenses, your court now is in the amount of $1,500. The deceased does meet all adequate criteria available for assistance, and there is no responsible party available for achieving that request this time,” the staff member said.
A county official asked what happens to unclaimed remains. The indigent services staff said the remains typically stay at the funeral home until they are claimed and that the county staff would follow up with the funeral director about retention policies. The board did not specify whether or when remains would be transferred to a public cemetery.
Commissioners moved to approve case numbers 20260001, 20260002, 20260003 and 20260025; a voice vote followed and the chair called for the ayes. The motion passed and the payments were authorized.
The board did not discuss an associated budget line on the record during the item. No further action was recorded.
