Council approves $53,000 for engineering to design Southeast Boone intersection rehabilitations

Wayland, director of public works, told the council the city had previously set aside $100,000 for intersection rehabilitation identified during last year’s goal-setting session and asked for $53,000 of that amount to be used for engineering and design for a Southeast Boone hot mix asphalt overlay project.
The project scope described to the council includes rehabilitation work on roughly 19 intersections with seven identified as in urgent need. Wayland listed intersections that will be included in the design work: First Street at Benton, Lynn, Cedar and Clinton; and Clinton Street at Union, Dorst and Aldridge. He said increased traffic related to the new Boone Community School District middle school and early childhood education center in that area has contributed to accelerated deterioration.
Council approved the request to move $53,000 toward engineering and design and directed staff to use remaining funds for other directed intersections such as Hancock and Southland. The council then passed the associated resolution by roll call.
Why it matters: The allocation allows the engineering work to proceed so the city can bid construction in coordination with state funding programs. Fixing intersections with failing subbases and damaged curb and gutter can improve safety and slow further pavement deterioration.
