Coconino supervisors approve community initiative funds for Dia de los Muertos celebration and ‘Voices Unheard’ event

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 21 approved two community initiative funding items: a $1,300 allocation to support the Museum of Northern Arizona’s Dia de los Muertos celebration and a budget transfer to support a “Voices Unheard” event organized by the county’s Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council (IPAC).
The Dia de los Muertos allocation is split across districts to cover decorations, flowers, musicians and workshops at the museum’s two‑day event. The museum representative who addressed the board described sugar‑skull workshops, live music and altars honoring ancestors and invited supervisors and residents to attend Oct. 29–30 in McGee Auditorium at Flagstaff Medical Center.
Supervisors also approved a Community Initiative budget transfer to support IPAC’s “Voices Unheard: Breaking the Silence” program, a public education and prevention event focused on stalking, harassment, domestic violence and missing and murdered Indigenous relatives. IPAC and community organizers described a program that includes keynote speakers with lived experience, presentations by investigators and service providers, and film screenings leading into the main event. Organizers said funds will cover venue and audio/visual costs; community partners and the county will assist with promotion and logistics.
Both items were discussed under the consent agenda but were pulled for brief public presentations and commissioner remarks. Supervisors voted unanimously to approve both items.
The board accepted the consent agenda except where items were separated for discussion. For the two items discussed in public, supervisors offered praise for the events and invited the public to attend. The board recorded unanimous aye votes on both actions.
