Selectmen approve hire for public health position, EMS appointment and several administrative items

At its Oct. 21 meeting the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved several personnel and administrative items.
Personnel: The board approved hiring Kelsey McCarthy as a sanitary and health program planner 1 for the health department. The hiring manager said McCarthy is a Fairfield University public-health graduate currently working in Monroe as a health program planner and community health educator; the town reviewed 22 applicants and interviewed three finalists.
Appointments: The board appointed Doug Simpson to the Emergency Medical Services Commission for a three-year term ending Nov. 15, 2026. Selectmen said Simpson has long-standing community involvement and had been vetted by commissioners and other recommenders.
Tax administration: The board approved tax refunds/overpayments on the consent agenda and approved a transfer of uncollectible motor-vehicle and supplemental tax balances to the suspense tax book, moving $7,472.44 in 2017 motor-vehicle amounts and $1,357.48 in 2017 supplemental amounts for a total transfer of $8,829.92. Town staff explained that statutes allow a suspense process for accounts the collector cannot locate or collect; amounts remain collectible and will reappear if registrations or estates are later found.
All motions passed unanimously.
