Board approves contracts to replace Waveny Park pool water service after suspected multiple leaks

The Board of Selectmen approved two contracts on Oct. 21 to replace the water service supplying the main pool at Waveny Park after staff detected multiple leaks along the existing line.
The board approved Hussey Brothers Excavating LLC for the excavation work for $11,900 plus a $1,190 contingency (total $13,090) and also approved Modern Plumbing for plumbing work not to exceed $10,000. Officials said funds are available in the pool account (the “pool bucket”).
Why it matters: public-works staff said the line supplying the pool is deep and has failed previously in the same general route. The existing line is copper and town staff plan to run a new PVC line along a route that uses a short stretch of concrete removal near the concession/snack bar and then crosses lawn areas to the filter building. A leak-detection firm reported the possibility of multiple smaller leaks in addition to the main failure.
Technical details mentioned at the meeting: the current supply is a small-diameter (2-inch) potable line that is buried deeply—staff said earlier footings and grades from historic pool construction placed the pipe well below the surface—and the new installation will use PVC. The presenter said the line may be roughly 36 inches below final grade in places and that site excavation will be disruptive but sized to minimize long-term impact.
The board approved both contracts unanimously.
