The Fortuna City Council on Oct. 20 approved the reallocation of three part-time park maintenance worker I positions into one full-time park maintenance worker II position, a staffing change staff said will improve recruitment and retention.
Staff reported that since January the city spent nearly $11,000 on pre-employment medical exams and background checks for eight candidates selected from interview panels for the part-time Park Maintenance Worker I role. Staff said the part-time positions have not attracted or retained employees due to low wages and limited benefits and that a full-time position is expected to be more attractive to qualified applicants.
The council discussed the cost savings potential and expressed support for the staffing change. There were no public comments on the item. A motion to approve the reallocation carried by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Staff said the $11,000 figure did not include staff time to prepare for interviews and background checks and that the change is intended to reduce ongoing recruitment costs and improve staffing stability.
