Two Woodside residents told the Town Council on Oct. 14 that they want a crosswalk and warning lights installed on Canada Road between Runnymede and Olive Hill to make it safer to reach the pedestrian walkway and Woodside Elementary School. The council said it would bring the request to the circulation committee for consideration.
"The cars and trucks coming off 280 going into town are still speeding when they come through our neighborhood," resident Maggie Betacray said, describing grandparents with strollers, parents with children and neighbors who feel unsafe crossing the street. "We feel unsafe because we have grandparents walking their grand grandbabies in strollers. We have moms and kids. We have all kinds of people who live in our neighborhood, and it's very dangerous for us."
Heidi Brown, who identified herself as a Woodside resident, said she has lived on Kenyatta Road since 1988 and that a recent flashing crosswalk at another location had significantly improved safety for schoolchildren. "If you would walk by the bike parking lot at Woodside Elementary a couple years ago and walk past it yesterday, huge difference," Brown said. She added that she has lost sight in one eye and that crossing Canada Road is terrifying for her; she called the requested improvements "a community service."
Brown said residents have begun collecting signatures in support of the request and reported "20 signatures already." Mayor Brian Dankowski said staff would "bring this up with the circulation committee and see where it can be prioritized" and encouraged residents to speak when the item is agendized. Town staff directed that the circulation committee will be the venue to evaluate the request and prioritize any potential pedestrian improvements.
