The Village Board reviewed a staff proposal on Oct. 13 to change parking restrictions on Rodenburg Road near Waterbury School and to install a crosswalk and ADA ramps to improve student and parent safety.
Deputy Chief Gates briefed the board on repeated complaints about parking congestion, vehicles blocking the school bus driveway and sight-line problems during student drop-off and pick-up. Gates cited the Illinois Department of Transportation Bureau of Local Roads and Streets guidance that a two-way road with parking on both sides ideally requires a 36-foot width (10-foot travel lanes plus 8-foot parking lanes), but Rodenburg Road measures roughly 30 feet, so parking on both sides is not feasible.
Staff recommended changing parking restrictions along Rodenburg Road between Waterbury Lane and Darby Lane to prohibit parking on the east side of Rodenburg in the school area, remove parking during school-drop-off hours at specified blocks (between 290 and 330 Rodenburg) and retain standard overnight parking limits elsewhere. The village also plans to install a crosswalk and required ADA ramps across 310 South Rodenburg Road to the median island between the school entrance and exit.
Trustees asked about implementation timing and outreach. Gates said the crosswalk striping should occur within the next month, with public works to follow behind to install signage. Gates confirmed staff will coordinate closely with Waterbury School and the impacted homeowners association to educate residents before citations are issued.
