Gilpin County appoints Clayton Hood as part‑time veteran service officer; accreditation delays cited

The Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners voted to appoint Clayton Hood as the county’s veteran service officer during its Oct. 14 meeting. The appointment passed 3–0.
Janie Barker, director of human services, told commissioners Hood has completed most training but must obtain accreditation and state certification before full duties are available. Barker said the federal government shutdown has delayed the Department of Veterans Affairs’ accreditation process; as a result Hood cannot yet access the VA system to submit claims and benefits paperwork.
Barker said the plan is for Hood to work as a part-time officer Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., which aligns with the county’s ability to secure partial state reimbursement for the position. The county also is arranging a dedicated cell phone for Hood so residents can contact him directly to schedule appointments.
Clayton Hood spoke briefly on his background, saying he served in the U.S. Navy and moved into veteran outreach work. Commissioners welcomed him and noted the county will pursue accreditation and certification as soon as federal offices resume normal operations.
