District staff provided the Akron Board of Education with construction updates on Oct. 20 for several capital projects, including Pfeiffer Miller South, North High School, Bookdo CLC stadium work and the Ellet CLC fieldhouse replacement.
The presenter reported that the Akron City Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for the Pfeiffer Miller South project on Oct. 17. Staff said a public comment period will follow before the district seeks final approval from Akron City Council in November; a community meeting is scheduled for Jan. 14, 2026 at the Kenmore Community Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a groundbreaking ceremony is planned for 2026 with date coordination ongoing with the mayor’s office.
For the North High School project, the first community meeting took place Oct. 9 and new design renderings were posted on the district website. The district received eight responses to its owner’s-representative request; staff vetted and ranked seven candidates and said a resolution to approve the rankings will appear before the board at its Nov. 3 meeting. Negotiations for the CMR (construction manager) were described as completed and the contract was being finalized for recommendation at the Nov. 3 meeting.
On the Ellet CLC fieldhouse, which the presenter noted was destroyed in a fire earlier this year, Paul Davis Restoration will meet with athletic coaches during the week of Oct. 20 to review equipment replacement options. The district reported it had received insurance coverage from its vendor to help pay replacement costs.
Board members who attended recent community and design meetings were thanked; staff reminded the public that project materials and renderings are available on the district website. No board vote on any of these projects occurred on Oct. 20, but staff said several formal approvals (owner’s-representative resolution, CMR contract, and City Council approvals) will be on future agendas.
