Council hears update on I‑75 PD&E delays; interchange improvements and noise‑barrier study on hold

Council member Jim reported to the council that Florida Department of Transportation work on the I‑75 project — including PD&E planning, noise‑barrier study and public hearings — has been delayed and that prior timelines will likely be extended at least a year.
Jim said project staff indicated the PD&E is in study phase and that drawings or timelines for improvements at the Bonita Beach Road interchange are not included in the current PD&E scope. Prior drafts had identified a possible timeframe as late as 2040–2045 for addressing the Bonita Beach Road interchange; Jim reported that schedule appears to be pushed further out.
He also said FDOT has completed model validation for the noise study but the draft noise analysis remains on hold pending rescheduling of the public hearing. Communities will have the opportunity to review findings and participate once hearings are announced, he said.
Jim urged the council and the metropolitan planning organization to seek clearer inclusion of the Bonita Beach Road interchange improvements in the ongoing planning process because the interchange is a recurring traffic and safety concern for multiple districts.
Council did not take formal action on the matter during the meeting; the update was provided as part of council member reports and staff follow‑up with the MPO was suggested.
