Commission backs QuikTrip billboard and monument sign requests; subdivision continued to August

Representatives for QuikTrip returned to the Kankakee Planning Commission with updated drawings for three items previously presented: a conditional use request for a taller billboard, a request for larger monument signage, and a proposed subdivision.
Skyler Evans, representing QuikTrip, said the billboard is intended to improve visibility for motorists and would be comparable to signs at nearby highway‑oriented businesses. He described the monument sign as a ground‑level sign reaching the canopy height and requested an additional 19 square feet for the monument and an additional 12 feet in height for signage to increase visibility for approaching traffic.
The commission voted to recommend the conditional use permit for the billboard to City Council (motion by Deb Terrell, second by Barry McCracken) and approved the variance for increased monument sign area (motion by Deb Terrell). The roll calls for both actions were affirmative. The third item—a major subdivision tied to the site plan—was continued to the commission’s August meeting at the applicant’s request to allow the plat to be finalized.
Commissioners emphasized sightlines and driver safety in their discussion. One commissioner said taller signage improves driver reaction time for lane changes to access the site. The commission recorded votes approving the billboard recommendation and the monument sign variance and continued the subdivision matter.
QuikTrip’s representative said plat drawings would be available for the next meeting. The commission instructed staff to forward the billboard recommendation and the monument sign variance approval on to City Council with the staff‑recommended findings.
