Commission approves revised floor system for Armory gymnasium; change reduces cost

Jamieson and staff asked the commission to approve Change Order No. 1 for the Armory gymnasium floor replacement. The contractor found the underlying concrete slab was thinner than expected after removal of the old floor, making the originally planned anchored ActionTech system inappropriate. The contractor recommended switching to a floating scissor-lock LP floor system. Jamieson said the alternative is a premium sports floor and will not represent a downgrade in durability or performance; staff confirmed the change order reduces cost by $7,151.22.
Mike McGilvery (on-line) and Jamieson explained the initial anchored recommendation had been chosen because of the desire for a low-profile floor to meet ADA transition constraints given the building's historic slab. After learning of the thinner slab, staff and the contractor concluded the floating system was the better technical fit and would require a different door transition detail. Jamieson said those transition adjustments were accounted for in the contractor's price.
The commission approved the change order by voice vote.
No additional appropriation was requested at the meeting; staff noted the reduction lowers the contract cost by the stated amount.
