The Chickasha Mayor and Council voted to amend the city code to allow crematoriums as a use permitted on review in C-2 (general commercial) zoning districts, enabling funeral providers to apply to the Planning Commission for individual proposals.
Council members said the ordinance does not authorize any crematorium to be built immediately; it only allows applicants to seek approval through the established use-on-review process that includes Planning Commission consideration and a subsequent council vote. Planning staff told the council that if the ordinance passes, applicants will be notified and surrounding property owners within the standard notification zone will be invited to comment at a Planning Commission hearing before the council makes any final decision.
The discussion drew lengthy comments from council members and residents about environmental impacts, distances for notice, and whether the state or other agencies regulate crematoriums. A funeral-home representative attended the Planning Commission meeting in support of the zoning change, the council was told. Council members asked staff to confirm whether state licensing applies and which emissions controls would be required if a crematorium application arrives.
Several council members and residents urged additional scrutiny. One council member said the typical 300-foot notice radius might not reach all nearby businesses and residents who could be affected, and urged careful review at the use-on-review stage. Others noted modern crematoriums use multiple filtration steps and equipment intended to limit particulate and contaminant releases and said that those technical requirements and any required state permits would be examined during the application process.
The council voted on ordinance 2025-11 to amend chapter 54, zoning, article 2 (C-2 general commercial district), adding crematoriums as a use permitted on review. The motion passed with one dissenting vote; the ordinance will allow, but not guarantee, future individual proposals to be considered through the established public-review process.
The council and staff said applicable notifications, Planning Commission review, state approvals (if required) and technical mitigation measures would be evaluated if a specific proposal is filed.
