Tigard-Tualatin student groups outline Red Ribbon Week activities, request brief student survey

Students from Tigard-Tualatin School District’s student prevention group STuD and members of the LEAP Youth Alliance presented plans for Red Ribbon Week and related prevention activities to the Tigard-Tualatin SD 23J Board of Directors, described upcoming events and asked the district to allow a short student survey to help shape prevention messaging.
The presentations to the board on student-led prevention work outlined planned Red Ribbon Week events, partnerships with the city and community groups, and a request for district permission to survey students. The STuD presenters said the student group planned a series of events including a pledge, poster contest, wear-red day, a mental-health hope rally, a raffle and booth at the football game, and a puzzle contest and awards for poster winners. LEAP said it will table with STuD at the district football game and asked the board for “the school’s blessing” to conduct a short student survey to better understand student knowledge and perceptions about alcohol and other substances.
Board members praised the students’ work and encouraged continued partnership. Vice Chair Irvin, Director Miles and others thanked students for outreach to elementary and middle schools, statewide conference participation and community events. Board members repeatedly described the students’ prevention and resilience-building activities as valuable to younger students and to the district’s broader prevention efforts.
LEAP and STuD listed additional yearlong activities they plan, including National Wellness Week and community educational events, and noted fundraising to support student attendance at a statewide prevention summit. Presenters named partnership organizations including Tualatin Together, the Oregon Youth Prevention Advisory Board and the Oregon Alcohol and Drug Policy Commission.
The presentation did not include a formal board vote or a district decision on the requested survey; LEAP said it would follow up with district staff. Board members and staff indicated appreciation and offered to stay engaged as students continue planning.
