The Riley County health department said on Oct. 20 it will receive $99,550 from the state WIC office to cover October salaries but remains short by roughly $30,000 because October contains three pay periods.
"We're going to receive $99,550 from the state WIC office for October salaries," Diane Creek, health director, told the commission.
Creek said the state WIC office is evaluating additional federal funding for November services and food benefits, and the department is preparing contingency plans in case funding interruptions continue. She said staff are planning for the possibility that the shutdown could extend past the first of the month and urged commissioners to consider planning for the second or third week of November.
Creek reported that staff at the Fort Riley IAC were informed they needed to vacate earlier than expected, so WIC services moved to Building 210. She said staff will run appointments by phone this week while IT and phone connections are completed; services are expected to resume as usual next week.
Creek thanked county IT staff and Fort Riley personnel who helped the rapid move and said community partners including Breadbasket are coordinating on food-support options if the shutdown continues to affect program funding. She also said the department has curtailed non-salary spending and is preparing a plan for commissioners in case additional expenses are needed to maintain services.
