Wyoming councilors approved a package of purchases for public-safety and fleet needs, including a rugged laptop and docking stations for a patrol vehicle, an updated alternative light source for forensic work, 19 replacement tactical helmets for the TAC team, subject-control training mats (covered by a grant) and an equipment trailer with trade-in credit.
Staff described the forensic alternative light source as more than 20 years newer than the current unit and used to detect bodily fluids, hairs and fibers; batteries on the old unit no longer hold a charge. Staff also said bullet-resistant materials age and helmets lose effectiveness, prompting the helmet replacements. The subject-control mats were reported to have safety deficiencies and a grant is covering that purchase.
The council approved the grouped resolutions on a roll call. Members asked questions about options and longevity; during discussion on the trailer purchase one council member asked whether higher-grade steel (and different vendors) should be considered given durability concerns; staff said fleet services recommended the selected unit and that trailers in the fleet commonly last 15-20 years.
