The Wyoming City Council on Oct. 20 approved a contract to remove thousands of wood pallets stored at 2553 Batt Drive SW that the fire department and a court found to be a significant fire hazard.
City staff said a July fire inspection discovered the pallets; the city issued citations to the tenant and property owner in September and the court ordered staged removal with completion by Oct. 15. The property removed some pallets in early stages but failed to complete later stages, and the court authorized the city to remove the pallets and assess costs back to the property owner. City staff recommended contracting with Michigan Wood Fibers for just over $26,000 to remove the pallets.
Council members cited the fire and neighborhood-safety risk. One council member said the situation represented a "disaster waiting to happen" if the pallets ignited. The council approved the contract on a roll call vote and staff said the cost will be assessed to the property owner as allowed by the court order.
