Halifax County launches Junior Commissioners Club for high school students

Halifax County on Oct. 20 launched a Junior Commissioners Club intended to introduce high school students to local government, civic engagement and career opportunities.
Commissioner Gary Redding described the partnership with the county’s 4‑H program and county departments, saying nomination forms, permission slips and program materials were developed over several months. Redding said students from eight area high schools (grades 10–12) are participating; not all students were present for the introduction.
Redding said the junior commissioners will take part in civic engagement activities, community service, job preparation and educational enrichment. The program’s next activity will be a job‑shadowing event where students will visit county departments to learn about different careers. Departments prepared “goodie bags” and materials to help students follow and observe the meeting tonight, and staff introduced county elected officials and senior staff to the students.
Chairman Vernon Bridal and County Manager Dia Denton thanked 4‑H and county staff for assisting with the program. Students and participating officials posed for photos at the conclusion of the introduction.
