The Aurora City Council on Oct. 20 approved Resolution 2025-118 accepting the Aurora Police Department's facial-recognition accountability reports, a measure tied to state law that sets reporting requirements for local law enforcement.
Commander Chris Poppe of the Aurora Police Department, who presented the report and the department's proposed policy, said the technology would be "an additional biometric method to identify those who are unknown during criminal investigations" and stressed that any lead from facial recognition "is just that" and "it's not probable cause. It doesn't lead us to arrest anyone." He told the council the department had drafted a policy that lists authorized uses and specific prohibitions, including not using the tool for civil immigration enforcement, ongoing surveillance without a warrant, or to harass or intimidate.
