Monticello High School senior Samantha (Sam) Veil told the school board Monday that a three-day basketball camp she ran in August raised $3,850 to seed a future scholarship for the girls’ basketball program.
Veil said the camp ran Aug. 11–13 with three one-hour sessions daily for different age groups: kindergarten–1st grade (11 participants), grades 3–5 (24 participants) and grades 6–8 (9 participants). She said community education retained a 30% registration fee; T-shirt costs totaled $351, leaving approximately $2,450 to go into a scholarship account.
‘‘I wanted to provide the same acknowledgment and encouragement I remembered feeling,’’ Veil told the board, describing how high-school players had helped her when she was younger. Veil said she plans to continue the camp each August and expects to process registration through community education.
Background and next steps Veil said her goal is to make the camp an annual fundraising source for the girls’ basketball program. The board thanked her and noted the camp’s role in youth engagement and leadership development.
