Members of the Alleghany County Agriculture Committee presented a post‑mortem of the 2025 Alleghany County Fair to the Board of Commissioners, reporting higher exhibition entries, expanded youth livestock participation and community sponsorships that offset costs.
Cindy Atwood and Jimmy Jones summarized event metrics: more than 1,000 exhibits were entered in 2025 from more than 300 individuals, and youth livestock shows drew 361 entries from about 104 youth. Two exhibits were selected as best of show and were presented at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh. The committee said attendance and participation improved despite weather and noted some attraction counts (a referenced derby reportedly drew more than 4,000 attendees at a single event).
The committee described program highlights: VIP seating innovations to reduce mud at the concert, successful youth and STEM engagement through a PBS Hands‑On Science tent staffed by volunteers and 4‑H and FFA student volunteer participation. The committee said the truck‑and‑tractor pull returned after several years and drew competitors from across the region, including long‑distance entrants.
Finance committee members provided a budget summary showing total estimated expenses of about $116,000, with projected final expenses near $114,000 after one outstanding invoice; sponsorships totaled about $52,000 from 55 donors. The fair committee reported the carnival rides and music show as the major expense items and said insurance costs were higher than budgeted because the committee purchased additional event insurance following prior storm damage.
Board members and staff praised the volunteer base and student volunteers for the fair's operation; the group flagged continued volunteer coordination, sponsorship outreach and planning for increased event participation as priorities. The agriculture board asked commissioners to continue county support for the fair.
No formal county action was taken during the report; commissioners thanked the committee and several commissioners publicly recognized individual contributors and volunteers.
