Commissioners discuss repairs to old courthouse cabin ahead of county centennial

Steele County commissioners discussed preservation and repair of an old courthouse cabin during the Sept. 9 session and asked staff to evaluate repair costs and historic status ahead of next summer’s centennial.
Wayne, a county employee who raised the issue, said the cabin’s roof is “really bad” and suggested the county put money aside so the building can be safe for tours. County staff agreed to inspect the structure and to check whether it qualifies for historic designation or grant funding.
Commissioners directed staff (Ben) to contact the Steele County Historical Society and produce an assessment of needed repairs and possible funding options. Staff reported an architectural consultant already took photographs and building-permit work is being tracked; commissioners said they want a recommendation on whether to budget work ahead of the centennial.
No appropriation was made at the meeting; staff will return with a scope and cost estimate for the commissioners’ consideration.
