Steele County commissioners approved a purchase contract for two tasers and two body-worn cameras from Axon after a budget hearing discussion on Sept. 9.
Marty, a county staff member who presented the quote, said the package for “2 cameras and 2 tasers” costs $23,546.40 and that the county has a Department of Justice grant that reduces the up-front cost. Marty said the grant is a “6-and-6 match,” and that using the match would lower the near-term county obligation.
The board discussed payment options and warranty coverage. Marty said the vendor offers a five-year payment plan with no additional interest and that the contract includes storage and warranty coverage and periodic equipment updates. He also noted the grant expires this year and described timing constraints for receiving the matching funds.
Commissioner Strand made the motion to approve the contract; a commissioner identified as Chris seconded it. The motion carried on a voice vote. The board instructed staff to proceed with the purchase and financing approach discussed.
The contract includes multi-year service components (storage and warranty) that will require future renewal decisions at the end of the five-year term. Commissioners said they plan to monitor budget balances at year-end to confirm available funds for any additional payments or renewals.
