Fabens ISD approves revised athletic stipend schedule; district remains under budget

The Fabens ISD Board of Trustees approved a revised athletic stipend schedule for the 2025–26 school year during the July 16 meeting, the athletics director said.
Presenter Jay Simpler told trustees the stipend sheet had been redone and that several new positions (highlighted in the packet) will be filled on an as-needed basis for middle school. He said the revisions allowed selective increases for some coaches while keeping overall stipend spending below the prior year’s budget. "We did come in under budget, so we're not increasing the stipend list," Simpler said.
Trustees asked why the cross-country head coach stipend differed from other head-coach stipends; presenters explained cross-country and wrestling stipends are lower in the local market because the seasons are shorter and neighboring districts pay less for those sports. The presenter said the cross-country coach did receive an increase over last year’s amount.
The board voted 6-0 to approve the stipend schedule. Trustees and presenters framed the changes as competitive adjustments intended to reward coaches and reflect market practice among nearby districts.
