Fabens ISD authorizes advertising 1925 school building for sale or lease conditioned on restoration

The Fabens ISD Board of Trustees voted 7-0 on May 21 to authorize the superintendent to advertise the district's 1925 School Building for sale or lease, provided any purchaser or lessee agrees to restore and maintain the fire-damaged structure and provide a public and educational benefit to the district's students and community.
"Whereas the 1925 school building, which has not been used as a high school for more than 60 years, has sustained significant fire damage and whereas the board of trustees wishes to have the building restored and preserved, but the District does not have the financial resources to restore the building," the superintendent read in offering the board's recommended resolution. The resolution states restoration would be financially feasible only if a third party purchases or leases the property and commits to preservation.
The board resolved that the building is surplus to current educational needs and authorized advertising the property for sale or lease, with terms and conditions returned to the board for final approval at a future meeting.
Trustees moved and seconded the resolution and approved it by voice vote recorded on the public record as 7-0. The administration did not provide a timeline for advertising, a minimum restoration standard, or expected financial terms during the public portion of the meeting; the resolution requires that any lease or sale terms be brought back to the trustees for final approval.
