The Fabens ISD Board of Trustees approved a $347,000 budget amendment to move funds into function 52 (salaries for SROs) and function 53 (technology salaries) after administrators said the original budget did not include SRO salaries and technology lines were underbudgeted.
Superintendent Dr. Segovia told trustees the district had identified line items with unused allocations that could be reallocated and that the amendment would not require dipping into the general fund. “The total budget amendment between those 2 functions, function 52 and function 53 is $347,000,” Dr. Segovia said.
Trustees pressed administration on why the amounts had been misallocated during last year’s budget development. Multiple trustees raised concerns that instructional funds had been left unused while critical operational salaries were not budgeted properly. Dr. Segovia and staff explained that SRO salaries had been omitted from the budget-build and that the technology salary line had been underbudgeted; payroll had continued to pay staff while the functions needed adjustment.
Board members asked for stronger checks during next year’s budget cycle and for a finance director to be hired to improve oversight. The board approved the amendment by voice vote; the roll-call tally was reported later in the meeting as 6-0 for the related motion to approve the budget amendments.
