The County Administrator told Greenville County Council on Jan. 21 that debris contractors have collected over 707,000 cubic yards of storm debris as of last week and that total collections could reach up to 1 million cubic yards.
The administrator said the volume collected so far is "equivalent to around 330 football fields" and that contractors are using as many as 60 double‑trailer trucks collecting debris daily and working seven days a week. He said crews were removing large, detached stumps now and would return with different equipment to remove stumps that still have trunks attached.
"As of last week, the county debris contractors collected over 707,000 cubic yards. That's equivalent to around 330 football fields. Our final totals could reach up to a million cubic yards," the County Administrator said. He added the contractor is currently removing detached stumps and will return for attached trunks, and noted workers are equipped for the differing equipment needs.
The administrator also described corrective work on fabric coverings at a county building entrance, saying the original contractor identified design issues and is supplying and installing replacement fabric and modified structural components at the contractor’s expense; he estimated completion around March or early April. The administrator said the county is tracking debris collection closely for reimbursement and that there are stringent purchasing and contractor‑approval requirements tied to the recovery work.
Councilors asked whether private tree‑removal companies can assist; the administrator said outside companies would need county approval and that pre‑existing contracts were in place. He also reminded constituents that debris on state roads is the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s responsibility and that council offices can coordinate with SCDOT for state‑road issues.
No new funding decisions were recorded during the report; the county administrator said the county is pursuing full reimbursement for eligible debris‑removal costs.
