Committee approves $5,000 district grant for Greenlink plaque commemorating Washington High School

The Committee on Finance approved a $5,000 community project application from the Greenville Transit Authority to pay for a commemorative plaque at the Greenlink campus honoring Washington High School.

Mister Lambert presented the application to the committee, saying, "The amount, requested $5,000. Project sponsors the Greenville Transit Authority, and this is Mister Mitchell's district." Lambert described the plaque as part of a wall on the Greenlink campus and said it will commemorate the school's operation from 1961 until 1970.

Council member Mitchell, whose district sponsors the request, said the plaque will sit near a park area outside the transit boardroom and that the county previously donated the property for the transit building. "There's a park area, and there's also going to be a monument that is in that park area outside of the, I think it's the boardroom of the transit," Mitchell said. He said the dedication is planned for the fall and that county support signals regard for the site's history.

The presenter confirmed the total project budget is $5,000 and that the full amount would be funded through District 23 community project funds. Committee members asked a few clarifying questions about the plaque and its placement. After discussion, the committee voted to approve the community project application; the chair announced, "The ayes have it." The committee also approved a motion to adjourn following the vote.

The project is a small, one-time district-funded community request; no countywide capital allocation or ongoing program commitment was made at this meeting.
