At the regular meeting the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce asked the Board of Commissioners to reinstate a $20,000 town partnership for 2024–25. Jim Thompson, newly named president of the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, asked the board to renew the town’s annual partnership contribution and described steps the chamber has taken to strengthen financial controls.
Board reaction and requested follow‑up Commissioners expressed general support for continuing the partnership, citing prior collaboration on leadership academies, workforce development and community events. Several commissioners nonetheless asked the chamber for detailed accounting of how prior town funds were spent and requested documentation (year‑end audit and financial examination) before additional membership funds would be disbursed.
Town staff response Kip (staff) said he would reach out to the chamber to request an accounting of last year’s expenditures and to specify that future disbursements (for example, the next $20,000 request) would require documentation of how prior funds were used. Staff noted the chamber provides a regular audit and said the town would request the chamber’s year‑end audit; however, one ongoing investigation related to the chamber’s finances has limited release of some materials.
Why it matters: Town funding for the chamber supports programming and community partnerships, but commissioners insisted on greater transparency when taxpayer funds are used.
Ending The board did not vote to change funding at the meeting; staff will contact the chamber for the requested accounting and audit documents and then return with options for any future funding authorization.
