A commissioner raised safety concerns about newly installed curb extensions, commonly called "calming corners," near Cordova schools and urged staff to consider the effects during peak traffic times.
"These I guess they call them calming corners or whatever, where they push out the corners so only one car can fit through at the intersections. They're doing that at Malaga and Dawes," Commissioner Dave said during the commission-comments portion of the meeting. "That area in the morning between Cordova High School, the middle school, and Cordova Meadows Elementary, that area is heavy, heavy, heavy traffic. And when everyone's going all different directions, and when only one car can pass through the stop sign, this is a problem just waiting to happen."
No additional formal direction to staff or action was recorded in the meeting minutes; other commissioners did not add substantive comments on the matter during the session. Director Arlene reminded the commission that the next planning commission meeting is canceled for the month and that the commission will reconvene if items are scheduled for October. The meeting then was adjourned.
The remark occurred during the commission comments portion of the agenda and was framed as an observation and concern rather than a formal proposal. The transcript shows no public testimony on this subject and no motion to study or change traffic-calming designs was made at the meeting.
