La Mesa holds interviews for Youth Advisory Commission openings; appointments set for Sept. 23

The La Mesa City Council on Sept. 9 conducted interviews with applicants for openings on the Youth Advisory Commission. Applicants who spoke included middle- and high‑school students and one young adult describing qualifications, community service and interest in serving.
Applicants who presented at the meeting included Maya Sapp, Miriam Garcia, Sochi Willa Gomez and Hailey West. Each had a three‑minute presentation describing school activities, volunteer experience and reasons for seeking appointment. One applicant, Hailey West, said she grew up in La Mesa and cited personal experience with local support services as motivation to give back: “This community has shaped me into who I am today, and I hope to make a difference in return,” she said.
The City Clerk noted that Lucille Alvey had withdrawn an application and several applicants were not present. The council did not make appointments at the Sept. 9 meeting; the City Clerk said appointments will be made at the Sept. 23 council meeting.
Interviewees represented La Mesa Arts Academy and other local schools and described interests including theater, choir, dance, ceramics and community outreach. The council thanked applicants and reminded younger candidates they were excused early because of school nights.
